Eltham Palace & Gardens

Eltham Palace & Gardens

Greenwich, London

A unique hybrid: a medieval royal palace with a 1930s Art Deco mansion grafted into it by millionaires Stephen and Virginia Courtauld. Cross a 15th-century stone bridge over the moat to enter the courtyard. The Great Hall dates from the 1470s with a magnificent hammerbeam roof — one of the largest in England. The Courtauld interiors are the real draw: the circular entrance hall features a concrete dome with glazed lantern, blackbean-veneered walls, and a marquetry world map in the floor. Virginia Courtauld's bathroom has gold mosaic tiles and an onyx bath. These interiors have doubled for 1930s Hollywood dressing rooms (Stan & Ollie), a royal yacht cabin (The Crown), and a chocolate baron's office (Wonka). The 19 acres of gardens include a sunken rose garden, herbaceous borders along medieval moat walls, and formal lawns. Light enters the entrance hall through the dome's lantern, creating dramatic top-lit effect. English Heritage managed; commercial filming requires formal hire agreement.

Old Royal Naval College Colonnades

Old Royal Naval College Colonnades

Greenwich, London

Grade I listed complex designed by Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor, built 1696-1712 as the Royal Hospital for Seamen. The colonnades — covered walkways of paired Doric and Corinthian columns along the four main courts — frame arguably London's most cinematic architectural vista: the symmetrical view from the Thames through the twin domes towards the Queen's House and Greenwich Park beyond. Portland stone surfaces are cream-white to warm grey, bouncing available light beautifully. The covered walkways provide consistent open shade even in bright conditions, reliable for portraiture. The central Grand Square is open lawn and paved courtyard — unobstructed and expansive. Morning light from the east warms the facades. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of London's most filmed locations with dedicated Film Office support staff. Grounds are open daily and free. Interior spaces (Painted Hall, Chapel) require separate access.
