Glenfinnan Viaduct Viewpoint
The viewpoint sits on a well-maintained footpath climbing the hillside east of the Glenfinnan Visitor Centre (National Trust for Scotland). From this elevated position, the 21-arch concrete viaduct curves across the glen in the mid-ground — approximately 380 metres long and 30 metres high, completed in 1901. Loch Shiel stretches into the distance beyond, with the Glenfinnan Monument visible at the loch's head. Summer light tracks across the north with golden hours past 10pm; winter gives dramatic low-angle side-light but only ~7 hours of daylight. The Jacobite steam train crosses the viaduct seasonally (typically mid-April to late October), usually around 10:45 westbound and 15:00 eastbound — this creates the iconic steam-and-stone shot. Crowds at the viewpoint can be very large in summer around train times. The footpath is a 10-15 minute walk from the car park with steep and muddy sections. Open moorland with no shelter. Waterproof gear essential — the western Highlands receive over 2,000mm rainfall annually.
