Clifton Suspension Bridge Viewpoint
The Sion Hill viewpoint on the north (Clifton) side of the Avon Gorge, offering the most composed view of Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge. From the grassy area near the Clifton Observatory, the full span is visible stretching across the gorge with limestone cliffs dropping 75 metres to the River Avon below. The viewpoint is slightly elevated above the bridge deck, giving a three-quarter angle that captures both towers, suspension chains, and gorge in a single frame. Morning light illuminates the Leigh Woods (south) side; afternoon and golden hour warms the Clifton towers and Georgian terrace of Sion Hill behind the photographer. Misty mornings are particularly prized — the gorge funnels fog and the bridge emerges dramatically. The grassy area is flat enough for tripods and small equipment. The bridge is toll-free for pedestrians. For filming ON the bridge, permits from the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust are required 4-6 weeks in advance.
