A 130-acre Grade I listed historic park laid out from 1873 by Andrew Pettigrew, adjoining Cardiff Castle. The Animal Wall — William Burges-designed stone wall with 14 sculpted animal heads from the 1880s — forms the southern boundary and is a striking foreground subject. The River Taff runs along the western edge providing waterside compositions; the Dock Feeder Canal lines the east. The arboretum holds a nationally significant tree collection with wood carvings from old stumps adding unique texture. The park transitions from formal gardens near the castle through open grassland to dense woodland and riverside — offering multiple distinct looks within walking distance. Doubled convincingly as New York's Central Park in Doctor Who. Open daily 7:30am-7:30pm, free entry. Commercial filming requires permits from both the Bute Park Team and Cardiff Film Office (7 days notice, £5M public liability insurance). Student/non-commercial: free under 2 hours. Feature film: £500-£1,000/day.
